Akpabio assures on Niger Delta development

Published

on

The newly appointed Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio and the Minister of State in the ministry, Mr. Festus Keyamo resumed work at the ministry soon after their swearing-in yesterday by President Muhammadu Buhari, promising to take the development of the region to an enviable height.

The assurance came just as the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed urged the staff of the ministry to redouble their efforts in order to help attain the ministry’s objectives.

Akpabio, Keyamo, and Ahmed spoke at their respective ministries as they resumed duties after they were sworn in by President Buhari.

At the reception organized by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, and management staff, in Abuja, Akpabio and Keysmo expressed their readiness to urgently address the developmental needs of the Niger Delta region.

He pledged to work harmoniously with his counterpart to ensure that they live up to the expectations of the administration of President Buhari.

The minister added that he loved leaving marks anywhere he worked and called on staff and management of the Ministry to ‘put all hands on deck to ensure that our developmental efforts yield fruits’.

In his remarks, the Minister of State, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, thanked the staff of the Ministry for the warm reception accorded them and pledged to give his best in boosting the confidence reposed in him through his appointment. He expressed his eagerness to get to work.

Also speaking, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Ahmed, who arrived at the ministry headquarters around 2:45 p.m., urged the staff to redouble their efforts.

She said: “We got these new assignments because of the quality of work we have been doing, I didn’t do the work you did. The Ministry of Finance has one of the best civil servants. We have been remerged with the Ministry of Budget and National Planning. It’s a very big responsibility that has been given to us.

“And you know our nation is facing a crisis, or near fiscal crisis. It’s up to us to make sure it is arrested, that we don’t slip into a crisis. We have been growing for eight consecutive quarters, our revenues have boomed but there’s still a 55 percent shortfall of what is projected. We still have to pay salaries, debts and also we have to operate on a daily basis for the sustainable growth of our economy. “

Wike, oil community at loggerhead

Published

on

Host communities of Oil Mining Licence (OML) 25 in Kula Kingdom of Rivers State, have rejected the intervention of Governor Nyesom Wike on the crisis that led to the shutdown of Belema Flow Station.

Nyesom Wike, Governor of Rivers State

Wike had summoned a meeting between the host communities and Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) to end the face-off between the communities and the multi-national oil firm.
The host communities had in 2017 shut down operations of OML 25 over alleged non-implementation of the Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU), which was signed on December 30, 2005, and February 13, 2015.

Addressing journalists in Port Harcourt, the state capital, yesterday, on behalf of the communities, the General Secretary of Belema Community Council of Chiefs, Alabo Finla Okoye Davies, said the issue was being handled by the federal government.

Davies insisted that those invited by Wike to attend the meeting over the shutdown of the flow station were not members of the host communities of the OML 25, adding that the rightful leadership of the communities was not invited.

He said: “We, the host communities have carefully studied the invitation to the meeting and wish to state that the key players and rightful leadership of the communities were not invited to the meeting. “Rather, some communities were not members of the host communities of OML 25.

“That the matter is being handled by the presidency and is currently before the Office of the Vice President for dialogue, negotiation, and peaceful resolution, which the Rivers State government is fully aware of.

“That the host communities of OML 25 do not have confidence in the Rivers State government handling the matter as previous administrations of Dr. Peter Odili and Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of which the present governor was part of these administrations, could not resolve.

“That the so-called intervention of the state governor on OML 25 issue is meddlesome as the issue is on the Exclusive List and not on the Concurrent List of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“We further view this meeting as an invitation to a resurgence of violence and anarchy in the Kula Kingdom, which is arguably the most peaceful environment in Rivers State.”

Enugu Decides: 70 political parties endorses Governor Ifeanyi as consensus canddate

Published

on

Seventy political parties in Enugu State have unanimously adopted Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi as their consensus candidate for the March 9 governorship election in the state.

The parties, under the auspices of Coalition of Registered Political Parties (CRPP), endorsed the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

This was disclosed by the leaders of the political parties during a courtesy visit to the governor at the Government House, Enugu.

They stated that “our mission here tonight is to reaffirm our total, unalloyed, unequivocal and unconditional support for your re-election as governor come March 9, 2019, which is barely 5 days away”.

The group’s coordinator, Barr. John Nwobodo, recalled that the body had in March 2018, “then consisting of 34 of the existing 40 registered political parties endorsed you for a second term in office”, disclosing that “today, the number of political parties that have joined in the crusade has increased to 70”.

The representatives of the parties, who expressed delight that Gov. Ugwuanyi’s ideology and programmes were “in tune and in line with theirs”, told the governor that “you now not only fly the flag of the PDP but you also the flags of the other political parties”.

They added that “the various political parties at party level voted unanimously for your adoption”, saying: “With this development, the individual political parties have collapsed their campaign structures to team up with you as their sole candidate”.

Describing the March 9 governorship election in Enugu State as “a referendum” on the governor’s achievements, the coalition declared that “we will speak again with our PVCs and ballot papers as we did in 2015”, revealing that they have directed their members and followers across the state “to cast their votes for you”.

Appreciating Gov. Ugwuanyi for always offering them a hand of fellowship, the group stated that “we are very happy with your good works and uncommon style of leadership”.

According to them, “Your Excellency, in an occasion like this, we cannot fail to acknowledge your giant imprints in the administration of Enugu State. Your have touched lives more than all the previous governments put together.

“From building durable roads to providing affordable housing and qualitative healthcare, Your Excellency, you have created amazing opportunities for our young ones, providing them with employment in education, health, judiciary, agriculture and in other critical sectors.

“You have provided interventions in small businesses and seed capital for young entrepreneurs. Your achievements have placed you as the darling of Nigerians giving rise to your many awards from the media, the Church, the civil society, including the political parties that recently recognized you as the Commander of Good Governance and Democracy Dividends in Enugu State”.

While presenting the adoption roll to Gov. Ugwuanyi, the chairmen of the parties wished him “successful campaigns in the remaining days and landslide victory at the polls on Saturday”.

Bayelsa: PDP calls for military replacement over alleged compromise

Published

on

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa has called for the replacement and redeployment of a new set of military officers to the troubled Nembe and Brass Local Government Areas (LGAs).

It was alleged that military officers, who were on duty during the February 23 elections had already been compromised.

The party has however, lauded the leadership of the Nigerian Police for the “bold” decision to arrest the masterminds of the abduction of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Federal Special Anti- Robbery Squad (FSARS), Mr. Kola Okunola, during the last election.

The Chairman of the party in the state, Chief Moses Cleopas, in a statement issued in Yenagoa, also raised the alarm that over 2,000 members of PDP loyalists who fled the violence in Nembe Bassambiri on the eve of the presidential election were being prevented from returning to their homes.

The PDP called on the federal government and the relevant security agencies to intervene in the tense security situation in Nembe Bassambiri where thugs allegedly backed by soldiers reportedly attacked their members to cart away election materials to Dairus Hotel for thumb-printing.

The state PDP chairman called on the Nigerian Army High Command to deploy a fresh set of soldiers to Nembe and Brass LGAs, insisting that the current set of soldiers had been compromised to tarnish the image of the establishment by aiding criminality and electoral violence in the state.

Cleopas expressed shock that the army had not been able to arrest any of the alleged APC thugs who had been shooting and harassing innocent people in the area.

He said it was rather shocking that the Nigerian Army had commenced a process of harassing innocent members of the PDP with a view to perpetrating low voters turnout to the detriment of the party in the area.

“Soldiers were sighted discussing with APC thugs who led people to break into the residence of a PDP stakeholder in the area, and former Commissioner for Special Duties, and later Water Resources, Chief Kuroghofa Walter Benwari.

“We call on the security agencies to ensure that the PDP members who fled Bassambiri during the attack by thugs aided by soldiers in Nembe Bassambiri are allowed to their residences without harassment,” he said.

However, the PDP chairman has lauded the leadership of the Nigerian Police for the “bold” decision to arrest the masterminds of the abduction of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of FSARS, Mr. Kola Okunola during the last election.

He called for immediate prosecution of the people that abducted Okunola and almost beheaded him before he was rescued for refusing to accept to manipulate the results in favour of an APC stalwart.
