The suspected shooter — a 14-year-old student at the north Georgia school — has been arrested and is being charged with murder. Authorities said he will be tried as an adult.
Data analysis by CBS News K-12 Shooting Database The data shows that of the more than 200 incidents through Sept. 4 — which include gang violence, domestic incidents and accidents, among other causes — 10 occurred in Georgia, including Wednesday’s incident.

The rest of the incidents occur after school hours, mostly during extracurricular activities like sports or school events, such as the shooting at a New Jersey high school football game in 2023 where a 10 year old child was murderedStatistics show that shootings inside school buildings are more deadly.
Of the 46 people killed in school shootings so far in 2024, 18 were under the age of 18, not including the two students and two teachers killed in the Sept. 4 incident.
After the 2012 shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado—which was the nation’s deadliest shooting at the time—many states began mandating active shooter drills, reaching 95% of public schools by the 2015–2016 school year. CBS News previously reported,
