Several cases of West Nile fever have been reported in Spain, a disease caused by the West Nile virus which is transmitted by mosquitoes. The condition can range from mild to severe.

A total of 56 cases of this fever have been recorded in Spain so far this year 2024In particular 9 in Extremadura and the rest in Andalusia, in addition to a total of five deaths, all of them in the province of Seville.

Symptoms:

According to the US National Library of Medicine, symptoms can appear 1 to 14 days after being infected.

Mild illness may cause some or all of the following symptoms:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Fever, headache and sore throat
  • lack of appetite
  • muscle pain
  • Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea
  • the rash
  • Swollen lymph nodes

These symptoms usually last 3 to 6 days but can last up to a month.

A more severe form of the disease may be called West Nile encephalitis or meningitis. Depending on which part of the body is affected. The following symptoms may occur and require timely attention:

  • Confusion or change in ability to think clearly
  • Loss of consciousness or coma
  • muscle weakness
  • Stiffness in the neck
  • Weakness in an arm or leg
